What is PCOS?

PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome. It is a hormone condition where the ovaries make more androgens than usual. Many women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, which means the body makes insulin but cannot use it well. The extra insulin pushes androgen levels even higher. This disrupts ovulation and causes irregular periods, extra hair growth, acne, and trouble getting pregnant. Symptoms usually start around the first period, but many women only get diagnosed in their 20s or 30s. PCOS affects as many as 5 million women in the US, and about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age worldwide.

A few things make PCOS research unusual. Most PCOS studies are run by universities and hospitals, not drug companies. And diagnosis is slow: in one large international survey, about 1 in 3 women waited more than two years, and nearly half saw three or more health professionals before getting an answer. Researchers are now testing new ideas, from a one-time ovarian procedure to a repurposed malaria drug.
