Brief summary:

Tear fluid will be collected from patients diagnosed with ocular trauma at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to evaluate biomarkers.

Eligibility Criteria

Sex: All

Age: 18+

Healthy Volunteers: Not accepted

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Diagnosis of visually significant cataract and scheduled for routine cataract surgery at UPMC with a clear corneal incision or
  • scheduled for clinical repair of a full-thickness corneal laceration.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Prior history of full-thickness corneal laceration from trauma or from a surgical procedure
  • Current diagnosis of glaucoma or use of ocular hypotensive drops or oral aqueous suppressants.
  • Actively being treated for the diagnosis of dry eyes with a topical drop other than artificial tears.
  • Actively taking oral or topical supplementation of Vitamin C.
  • Scheduled for additional eye surgeries, combined with the routine cataract surgery.
  • Surgical plan that would include incisions in the clear for cataract extraction.
  • Inability to provide informed consent due to suspected head trauma, altered mental status, or other factors impairing decision-making capacity.
