Study Details

Brief summary:

This pilot study is testing whether a special type of ultrasound called contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can help detect if pancreatic cancer has come back after surgery.

People may be eligible to participate if they had surgery to remove pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) from the head or body of the pancreas and are currently being monitored for cancer recurrence using CT scans.

The study plans to enroll 10 participants: 5 people whose cancer has returned and 5 people whose cancer has not returned, based on their standard medical imaging results. Participants will not be randomly assigned to groups.

Researchers will use a Logiq E10 ultrasound machine with CEUS technology to perform an ultrasound examination of the area where the surgery was performed. The goal is to determine whether CEUS can be a practical and useful tool for identifying local pancreatic cancer recurrence.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Criteria

Sex: All

Age: 18+

Healthy Volunteers: Not accepted

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Individuals must meet all of the following inclusion criteria in order to be eligible to participate in the study:

1. Be a patient that underwent surgical resection of PDAC located in the head or body of the pancreas and are being followed for recurrence with CT imaging as part of their standard of care.
2. Be 18 years of age or older.
3. If the subject is of child-bearing potential, must have a negative pregnancy test.
4. Be conscious and able to comply with study procedures.
5. Have read and signed the IRB approved consent form for participating in the study.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • An individual who meets any of the following criteria will be excluded from participation in this study:

1. Females who are pregnant or nursing.
2. Patients who have received an investigational drug in the 30 days before study drug administration or will receive one within 72 hours afterwards.
3. Patients who are medically unstable, patients who are seriously or terminally ill, and patients whose clinical course is unpredictable. For example:

  • Patients on life support or in a critical care unit.
  • Patients with clinically unstable cardiopulmonary conditions (acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary artery syndromes, worsening or unstable congestive heart failure, or serious ventricular arrhythmias)
  • Patients with recent cerebral hemorrhage (within 1 month).
4. Patients who have undergone surgery within 24 hours prior to the study ultrasound imaging examination.
5. Patients with congenital heart defects.
6. Patient with a known allergy to Lumason.

Interventions and Outcome Measures

Arms

experimental: Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS)

Participants who have undergone surgical resection for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and are undergoing standard of care CT surveillance will receive one contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) examination following intravenous administration of Lumason to evaluate the surgical site for local disease recurrence.

Interventions

Lumason

Lumason will be administered as an intravenous bolus injection of up to 2.4 mL prior to CEUS imaging

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound

One transabdominal contrast-enhanced ultrasound examination of the pancreatic surgical site will be performed using a Logiq E10 scanner with a curvilinear (C1-6) probe following administration of Lumason.

Primary outcome measure

  • Presence of Contrast Enhancement in the Pancreatic Surgical Site on CEUS [ Time Frame: At CEUS examination, up to 1 hour ]
