Can glaucoma be cured?
No, not yet. Vision that glaucoma takes away does not come back. Treatment has one proven goal instead: lowering eye pressure, which can slow the disease or stop it from getting worse. Doctors get there with drops, laser treatment, or surgery, and researchers are testing new approaches in trials right now.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that slowly damage the optic nerve, which carries visual signals from the eye to the brain. It's usually linked to high pressure inside the eye, but some people develop it with normal pressure too. Vision loss typically starts in the side vision first. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting over 4 million US adults (about 1 in 60), usually after age 40.
Research here has a few quirks. Drug trials measure eye pressure rather than vision itself, since vision changes take years to appear. Most current studies are surgical or device trials.
Who can participate in glaucoma clinical trials?
Each study sets its own criteria, but common ones include your glaucoma type, how advanced it is, eye pressure, and current treatments. Doctors often grade severity as mild, moderate, or severe, and studies recruit accordingly, drop studies may want mild to moderate cases, surgical studies may want more advanced ones. Some studies don't require a diagnosis at all, enrolling glaucoma suspects or people with high eye pressure but no nerve damage yet (ocular hypertension). Black and Hispanic adults have been underrepresented in past trials, so many studies now actively welcome them. Eligibility always varies by study.
What causes glaucoma?
Glaucoma comes from damage to the optic nerve, and in most cases that damage is linked to high fluid pressure in the eye. Pressure is not the whole story though, because the disease can develop even when pressure readings are normal. Age, family history, diabetes, severe nearsightedness, and high blood pressure all raise the risk, and long-term use of steroid medicines can cause a secondary form of glaucoma.
What is usually the first sign of glaucoma?
Usually there is none. Side vision fades slowly, the brain fills in the gaps, and most people notice nothing for years. That silence is why about half of the people who have glaucoma do not know it, and why most cases turn up during an eye exam rather than because something felt wrong.
Can I stay on my eye drops during a clinical trial?
It depends on the study. Many glaucoma drug trials compare the new treatment against a proven drop rather than a placebo, so participants are not left without pressure lowering treatment. The study team explains exactly what happens with your current drops before you decide anything.
Do glaucoma trial participants get paid?
