HPV is so common that most sexually active people get it at some point, and the body usually clears it without anyone knowing. When it lingers, certain types can cause cancer years later, including more than 90 percent of cervical cancers and most cancers of the throat. A vaccine that prevents these infections has been available since 2006. The vaccine does not treat an infection that is already there, and trials are testing therapeutic vaccines and treatments that clear HPV and precancer before it becomes cancer.
