What is multiple sclerosis?

In MS, the immune system attacks myelin, the insulation around nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. Damaged spots, called lesions, slow or block nerve signals, which is why symptoms range from fatigue and numbness to vision problems and trouble walking. Symptoms and pace differ so much between people that MS is often called a disease with a thousand faces. It is not contagious, and it is not directly inherited. Worldwide about 2.9 million people live with MS, someone is diagnosed roughly every five minutes, and the average age at diagnosis is 32.

Research in this field carries one of the most striking findings in modern medicine: a 2022 study of more than 10 million US military members found that infection with the Epstein Barr virus, the common virus behind mononucleosis, raises MS risk 32 times, making it the leading suspected cause. Meanwhile treatment keeps expanding, with more than 20 approved disease modifying therapies, though the progressive forms still have almost none.
