Edmonton has a research history that most cities cannot match: the first successful islet cell transplant protocol for type 1 diabetes, known worldwide as the Edmonton Protocol, was developed at the University of Alberta in 2000 and changed transplant medicine. Diabetes studies are still a local strength, alongside cancer research at the Cross Cancer Institute, the comprehensive cancer centre for northern Alberta since 1968. Of the roughly 500 studies recruiting in the city, about a third are in oncology, with multiple myeloma and breast cancer among the most common, and the rest span inflammatory bowel disease, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep apnea.
