What is Alzheimer's disease, and why research matters

Alzheimer's begins in the brain 15 to 20 years before the first symptom. Two proteins build up: amyloid, which forms plaques between brain cells, and tau, which forms tangles inside them. Over time nerve cells die, starting in the memory centers. The first stage most people notice is mild cognitive impairment, forgetfulness that is more than normal aging but does not yet disrupt daily life. From there the disease moves through mild, moderate, and severe dementia. Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging.

Two new drugs, lecanemab and donanemab, can clear the sticky protein (amyloid) from the brain and slowed memory loss by about a third in people caught early. In 2025 doctors got a blood test that finds amyloid, so people no longer need a brain scan or spinal tap to check. Now researchers are trying to treat people who have amyloid but no symptoms yet, hoping to stop the disease before it starts.
