What is chronic sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis, also called chronic rhinosinusitis or CRS, means the sinuses and nasal passages stay inflamed for 12 weeks or longer, even with treatment. A regular sinus infection usually clears up in about 4 weeks. This one doesn't. Common symptoms include a blocked or stuffy nose, drainage down the back of the throat, pressure or pain in the face, and a weaker sense of smell. Nearly 29 million US adults, about 1 in 9, reported a sinusitis diagnosis in the past year.

There's no staging system for this condition. Instead, doctors split it into two types, and trials recruit for each separately. With nasal polyps (CRSwNP) means soft growths form inside the nose and sinuses, driven by a type of inflammation called type 2, or eosinophilic. That same type of inflammation drives asthma and atopic dermatitis too, which is why the three conditions often show up together. Without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) means the same long lasting inflammation, but no growths. Knowing which type you have helps you figure out which studies fit you, since most trials list the type right in their eligibility rules. Trials in this field usually track two things: the size of the polyps, seen with a small camera, and how blocked your nose feels day to day.
