Why research matters?
The medical options available depend enormously on which substance is involved. Nicotine has seven approved treatments in the US. Opioids have three. Alcohol has three. Stimulants such as methamphetamine and cocaine have none at all, and neither does cannabis.
That gap is not because stimulant addiction is rarer or less serious. It is because the research has been harder and slower. Every medication option for stimulant use disorder that exists today exists inside a clinical trial, which makes research in this area less of a backup plan and more of a front door.
Types of substance use disorder clinical trials
Medication trials
Studies of new compounds, and of existing medicines used in new ways or new combinations. Coverage is uneven by substance, which is the gap described above.
Behavioural and contingency management trials
Contingency management, in which people receive escalating rewards for verified periods without use, has the strongest evidence of any approach for stimulant use disorder. It appears in 116 recruiting studies, often combined with medication or delivered through an app.
Access and delivery trials
Research on where treatment starts rather than what it is: emergency departments, primary care, pharmacies, jails before release, and telehealth. These trials test a better route to treatments that already exist.
Studies in specific groups
Pregnant people, adolescents and young adults, people who use more than one substance, and people with a co-occurring mental health condition. Standard approaches were mostly tested in other populations, so dedicated research exists.
Observational and registry studies
Following people over time without changing their treatment. Eligibility is often broad and no new medicine is involved.
Who can participate in substance use disorder clinical trials?
Most studies enrol adults with a diagnosed substance use disorder. Many require that you are currently using, because the outcome being measured is whether use goes down. Others look for a specific situation such as a recent hospital visit, an upcoming release from incarceration, or a set period already spent in treatment.
Studies generally exclude people with certain medical conditions or interacting medications, and trials involving pregnancy have their own criteria. Eligibility always varies by study, and the study team confirms it during screening.
Does information stay confidential when participating in trials?
Yes. Research participation is governed by privacy rules that control how your information is stored and who can see it. It is not shared with employers and does not become part of any public record. This is a common and reasonable question in this particular area, and any study coordinator should be able to explain exactly who has access to what before you consent.
How to enroll in a clinical trial for substance use disorder
Identify your study. Use the filters to combine your substance with your location. Titles usually name the substance, the approach being tested, and sometimes the setting, such as "emergency department" or "telehealth".
Check the setting. Some studies run in clinics and hospitals, others largely by telehealth. The study details explain how visits work and how treatment is provided during the study.

Submit the application. A study coordinator reviews it and contacts you. Nothing is decided until you have gone through informed consent.
