What dental clinical trials are studying

Dental implants. New implant designs and surfaces, and materials that rebuild bone where a tooth has been missing for a while, so an implant can be placed. Implant studies usually follow participants for years, because the question is how long the implant lasts.

Orthodontics. Clear aligner systems tested in adults with crowded or misaligned teeth, comparing how well and how fast they move teeth.

Fillings and restorations. Newer composite materials tested for wear, color, and how well they hold up in front teeth over time.

Gum disease and oral health. Treatments for periodontal disease, and programs that bring dental screening into regular medical visits for older adults and people with chronic conditions such as diabetes.

Dental fear. Stepped care programs that start with simple coping strategies and add more support only if needed, for teenagers and adults who avoid the dentist because of fear.

Children's cavities. Studies of silver diamine fluoride, a liquid that stops decay without drilling, and of sealants.
