What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, is a developmental condition present from early childhood. Doctors diagnose it based on two things: differences in social communication, such as how a person uses eye contact, gestures, and back and forth conversation, and restricted or repetitive patterns, such as intense focused interests, routines that feel essential, repeated movements, or strong reactions to sounds, textures, or lights.

Autism is not caused by parenting, and decades of large studies have found no link to vaccines. Genetics play the biggest role: twin studies estimate that about 80 percent of autism risk is inherited, and hundreds of genes have been linked to it. Prenatal factors like parental age and certain pregnancy complications add smaller risks. Autism is also rarely alone. ADHD, anxiety, epilepsy, sleep problems, and gastrointestinal issues occur far more often in autistic people than in the general population, and treating those conditions is often where medical care actually helps.
