What is chronic pain syndrome?

Chronic pain syndrome is an older, informal name for pain that lasts and starts running a person's life. It is not a formal diagnosis today. Doctors now use chronic primary pain instead. That means pain that lasts or keeps coming back for over three months, brings real distress or gets in the way of daily life, and is not explained by another condition. Fibromyalgia and nonspecific low back pain are two named examples. And the distress is not a small thing: in a worldwide analysis of nearly 350,000 adults with chronic pain, about 4 in 10 had clinical symptoms of depression, and about as many had anxiety.
