Frontotemporal dementia is the most common form of dementia in people under 60, and it usually changes personality, behavior, or language before memory. Because of that, it is often first mistaken for depression, a psychiatric illness, or Alzheimer's, and getting the right diagnosis takes an average of more than three years. There is still no treatment that slows the disease, and some cases are caused by a single gene, trials can now test therapies designed for that gene and follow families before symptoms begin.
