Why research matters?

The medical options available depend enormously on which substance is involved. Nicotine has seven approved treatments in the US. Opioids have three. Alcohol has three. Stimulants such as methamphetamine and cocaine have none at all, and neither does cannabis.

That gap is not because stimulant addiction is rarer or less serious. It is because the research has been harder and slower. Every medication option for stimulant use disorder that exists today exists inside a clinical trial, which makes research in this area less of a backup plan and more of a front door.
