What is dementia?

Dementia is not one illness. It is a group of symptoms caused by damage to brain cells: memory loss, trouble with reasoning, language or judgment, bad enough to get in the way of daily life. What caused the damage decides the type. Alzheimer's disease is the most common, and it has its own Alzheimer's clinical trials page. Vascular dementia comes from poor blood flow to the brain, often after strokes. Lewy body dementia brings hallucinations and changing alertness along with the movement problems seen in Parkinson's. Frontotemporal dementia starts younger, often in the 50s, and changes personality or language before memory. After 80, many people have more than one cause at once.

About 7.4 million Americans aged 65 and older have Alzheimer's dementia in 2026. Deaths from it rose 134 percent between 2000 and 2024, while deaths from heart disease and stroke fell. Research moved fast lately. The FDA cleared the first Alzheimer's blood tests in 2025, which makes screening for trials much easier, and large studies showed that treating blood pressure, hearing loss, diabetes and inactivity can delay or prevent many cases. That is why prevention studies, and studies of the types that are not Alzheimer's, keep growing. The stage before dementia, mild cognitive impairment, has its own studies too.
